whats a prayer?

For many of us prayer is part of our everyday routine . We also see that it finds a place in a good number of important functions that we celebrate. What then is prayer? Curiously enough, this is not a question that many are comfortable with. Perhaps it is because the answer is neither simple nor clear-cut.

You often see passers-by paying obeisance while crossing a place of worship. What prompts them to indulge in these gestures? Undoubtedly it is
an acknowledgment that a creator or a higher Power that controls our destiny exists, but does the act stem from love, hope fear or faith?

As a Child, I used to watch an aunt recite her beads, Her lips told the name of God, but her eyes were every were everywhere and ears all attention to what took place around her. Occasionally she would add her comment to what was being said. was she really praying, I dearly wanted to know, but was afraid to ask , I realize today that the question is a moot one, for there are as many ‘pray-ers’ as there are prayers.Prayer is an index of our belief in God and our relationship with Him. What we say and how we say it reflects and reveals the image we have of him.
