“India is a source, destination, and transit country for women, child and men trafficking the purposes behind trafficking being forced labor and commercial sexual exploitation,” said the 2009 Trafficking in Persons Report released by Clinton Tuesday.
It was also observed that in recent years, there has been an increase in sex trafficking in medium-sized cities and satellite towns of the big cities, the report says India is a hot destination for women and girls from Nepal and Bangladesh trafficked for the purpose of commercial flesh trade.
There is also labor trafficking among the thousands of Indians who migrate willingly every year to the Middle East, Europe, and the US for work as domestic servants and low-skilled laborers.
India does not fully comply with the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking, the report said. However, it is making significant efforts to do so.
“Despite these significant efforts, India has not demonstrated sufficient progress in its law enforcement efforts to address human trafficking, particularly bonded labor,” it said.

Activists of Jeevika Organisation freed Mahesh a bonded labourer , who was made to work as a bonded labourer at Yalagere village in Chikkaballapur taluk in Karnataka INDIA, on Tuesday on 16 June 2009. Organizers of Jeevika Muniratnamma Organization and other activists can be seen along with the boy.
